Mark Shupe is the creator, curator, and capitalist of Poetic Justice Capital Management. He is also the creator of the Poetic Justice Warriors blogpost series at the Center for Individualism. There, he spotlights many giants of economics whose shoulders we stand on.
Mark’s career in the securities industry began in 1986 as Account Executive with a Wall Street firm. His path led from Financial Advisor to Branch Manager in retail brokerage, and eventually to the institutional, trust administration side.
During his career, Mark gained extensive experience as a training manager, compliance supervisor, and fiduciary.
While serving as Area Training Manager, Mark was introduced to a truly objective system for helping clients with their investment strategy decisions. He soon realized that most new advisors fail, in part, because the product was the portfolio, and the traditional advice model was unnecessarily complex and unreliable.
Advisors were being trained to parrot the industry “best practices” that best served those without skin in their client’s game.
In October 2008, the nadir of the industry’s recent history, Mark was hired as Portfolio Manager in the wealth management and trust office of a large, regional bank. Once there, the executive director asked him to help reverse client losses, implement his true wealth management process, and cause it to be used by all portfolio managers.
Needless to say, the investment committee leadership team was not interested in becoming irrelevant.
